Interview: Karthik
Crafting with Colour
A Video Conversation with Karthik
Print.Able is happy to introduce Karthik who is being interviewed in this post. The interview is in Kannada, and we include a short clip from the video at the end of this post.
The video opens with a scene of Karthik at a table covered in newspaper covered in various colourful painted objects – diyas, statues of Ganesha, a candle holder. He is painting a diya. You can tell that he is concentrating very hard on his task, holding the small clay lamp with care, and turning it as he paints.
The interviewers first question (not heard) is ‘What are you doing?’
We share the clip from this point to when he talks about the colours he likes.
The conversation in the video has been transcribed to English text, and is appended below.
It closes with the interviewer asking what he likes to paint, other than the diyas, and our eye is drawn back to the range of colourful, carefully painted objects on the table.
The Interview, transcribed and translated from Kannada into English

Interviewer: You’re painting? What are you painting … hmm? What are you painting?
Karthik: Diyas painting.

Karthik: I want to sell them.
Interviewer: Sell them, is it? When do you paint the diyas? Hmm? Do you like painting?
Karthik: I like painting very much.
Interviewer: Who taught you? Who taught you to paint?
Karthik: My mother taught me.
Interviewer: Your mother taught you, is it? Does she also paint with you?
Karthik: Amma also paints with me.
Interviewer: Who tells you what colours to use? Do you select them or does your mother?
Karthik: My mother selects
Interviewer: Do you also select?
Karthik: Yes, I’m selecting the colours.
Interviewer: What colour do you like?
Karthik: I’m using gold at present.
Interviewer: Oh, you’re using gold. What other colours do you like?
Karthik: After this I’m going to use pink.
Interviewer: Pink, is it? After painting you sell the diyas. What do you do with the money?
Karthik: How much money dad? No money.
Interviewer: No money? Fine. Do you paint only diyas? What else do you paint? Can you tell me what are all the different things you paint?
The Clip:
So pretty.continue ur passion.
ReplyDeleteKarthik, I love your colourful Diyas and how well you have painted them. Your mother has taught you well๐๐
ReplyDeleteThe colours on the diyas are so bright. I wish all your diyas get sold Karthik. Good luck
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done Karthik! I wish I could buy some diyas from you!!
ReplyDeleteDear Karthik. May the diyas that you paint with lovely vibrant colours brighten up people's lives.Keep this going.
ReplyDeleteWatching you paint and simultaneously answer the interviewer, remarkable indeed. Multitasking while doing an art work is not very common. You did both with such simple elegance. Karthik I admired that your work place despite all the ongoing painting to be so tidy. Am sure your Amma would appreciate this of you!! Wonderful artwork by you Karthik!! My only suggestion to you would be as far as possible stay with safe colours. Healthy for you and our earth can absorb it with ease
