Talking to an Author An Interview with Aditi Sowmyanarayan Aditi Sowmyanarayan was not quite 18 when she was awarded the J.K.Paper AutHer Award for Best Manuscript in 2023. The award by J.K.Paper was to partner with Publisher Readomania to bring out Aditi’s novella, Gobble Thy Prejudice . But Aditi was a published author even before this, having contributed to Talking Fingers , a book about non-speaking autistics. More recently, her collection of short stories was published by Booksomania in February 2023, titled Small Stories Big Thoughts , now in its third imprint.   Crafting with Colour A Video Conversation with Karthik Print.Able is happy to introduce Karthik who is being interviewed in this post. The interview is in Kannada, and we include a short clip from the video at the end of this post. The video opens with a scene of Karthik at a table covered in newspaper covered in various colourful painted objects – diyas, statues of Ganesha, a candle holder. He is painting a diya. You can tell that he is concentrating very hard on his task, holding the small clay lamp with care, and turning it as he paints. The interviewers first question (not heard) is ‘What are you doing?’ We share the clip from this point to when he talks about the colours he likes.   Strong Girl, Triambika Triambika loves art and animals.  Here we display a collage made by her using  recycled scraps of paper: This is what her proud mother has to say about her : My eight-and-a-half year old daughter is an active, bold, confident and playful young girl who can understand and analyze situations when they are explained to her. She is very affectionate towards animals, especially dogs. She understands their needs and takes care of them very well. She is interested in art. She is very creative and uses most recycled items for her art works. She also engages herself at home in narrating her conversations with her friends, and cartoon TV shows through songs. She is challenged but she is a most precious and loving child.

Hard Work by Varun Hard work! In the end it really matters. Accomplishing goals and aspirations needs hard work!  It was very hard for me to understand that. To be honest I believed I was born with a silver spoon until recently, when I was looking and searching for a shortcut to achieve my aspirations and wondered why I always failed.  Well, I’m just starting to come out of that hole, the hole where working hard and working smart never mattered, and I only relied upon quick shortcuts. I guess that’s how my addiction started. I was in search of a quick shortcut to constant happiness, ignoring the fact that that’s humanly not possible, and never learning that hardwork is  part of a key to happiness!  Now that’s all’s well. I cherish hard work. Visit to Kannur – The Annular Solar Eclipse by Ajit Chandrasekhar My wish was to see the annular solar eclipse. My wish was fulfilled in 2019 when my family expressed their desire to see the eclipse.  Indira and I checked where the eclipse would be visible. It was visible in many places in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. When we finally checked where the best place was to view the eclipse, it was Kannur. The eclipse was visible on 26th December 2019, Boxing Day. We were a group of thirteen – James, Indira, Mira, Jai, Amma and myself, Sam, Kusha, Louisa, Varun, Karthika, Aniki and Arshia. We left Bangalore on the afternoon of the 22nd of December. We flew from Bengaluru. We reached Kannur in the evening just as the sun was setting. It was lovely to see the sunset by the sea. We stayed in the Kanaka Guesthouse. We had an early dinner and went to bed. The rooms were comfortable. The next day, Mira, Indi, Jai and I went to the Kannur Fort and St Angelo’s church. Came back for lunch....

I get up at 7 o’ clock and after completing my daily routines and after eating breakfast I leave for Antharbhaava at 9:30. I make paper bags at Antharbhaava. We start at 10:00 am and have a tea break from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm and a lunch break from 1.30 pm to 2:00 pm. I leave Antharbhaava at 4.30 pm for home. I reach home from Antharbhaava, where I work, at 5:00 pm. At home, I listen to music in my free time. After doing my household work I listen to music on my mobile phone. War, genocide, torture everywhere we look, the news channels headlines are “air strikes kill 10 people including children”, we as a species are hell bent on annihilating ourselves and I don’t know why that’s happening, countries start wars for territory, people are murdered in the name if religion! As a species we’ve evolved and have a great deal of intelligence on what’s going to happen if we continue the ruthless killings, we’re aiming for the stars, interstellar travel and we aim to avoid extinction but by recent events I’m not sure if we’ll survive survive extinction, any intelligent species after us would name our extinction “Greed - The fall of Humanity”!
